The second SWITCH policy workshop, part of the Horizon Europe project, provided valuable insights into innovative strategies and technologies aimed at promoting healthy and sustainable diets across EU regions. The event showcased key digital tools, mission-driven partnerships, and research-backed interventions to facilitate dietary transitions.
The SWITCH Digital Hub Experience App
Emily Groves and Margherita Motta (EPFL) presented the upcoming SWITCH Digital App, set for release in early 2026. Designed to support both citizens and policymakers, its features include:
- A Food Index assessing environmental and nutritional impacts.
- Sustainable Recipes validated by experts.
- An Interactive Chatbot offering food education.
- Policy Tools with qualitative and quantitative insights.
- A Connection Hub linking consumers to local food producers.
The app aims to provide decision-makers with a dashboard of data-driven insights from the SWITCH project, supporting evidence-based policies for healthier food systems.
The SWITCH-Hub: A Mission-Driven Partnership
Maria Biörklund Helgesson (RISE) and Malin Barman (Chalmers) introduced the Gothenburg Food Hub, a collaborative model engaging food providers, educators, healthcare professionals, and policymakers. Its initiatives include:
- Sustainable Seafood Programs: Encouraging seafood consumption in schools.
- Whole Grain Partnership: Raising awareness and increasing whole grain intake.
- 12-Week Intervention Study: Evaluating the health and climate impacts of the SWITCH diet.
Key Initiatives Driving Change
- Public School Meals Initiative: Increasing seafood in school lunches, with a pilot in Autumn 2025.
- Industry Engagement: Hosting seminars and tasting events at a major Seafood Summit.
- Broadcasting Event: Featuring chefs and nutritionists to promote plant-based diets.
- Nudging Experiments: Boosting plant-based food sales at public events.
- Science Festival: Showcasing whole grain promotion strategies.
Future Perspectives
Moderated by Marta Antonelli (CMCC), the discussion emphasized scalability, policy integration, and cross-sector collaboration. Expanding successful models across Europe remains a core priority for SWITCH.
